The P8R head has the same valve (and port?) size as a stock VTEC head, for reference, so I'm assuming airflow wouldn't be too-far off-par with one. While personally I would love to build an all-motor non-VTEC B20, but if you're looking for budget power, skip straight into the VTECs.

That also being said, I'm waiting to see dyno numbers from a friend's built LS with a heavily ported head - I keep telling him to dyno it all-motor before he tosses his GT4088 on it, but regardless we'll see what it pulls. It's one of very few fully-built LS engines without VTEC that I've seen as of late.

His name is Brock, from Layton. He's not on this forum, though. Just look for a beat-up green/purple/flat-black EJ1 at the drags, on Fit wheels wrapped in aired-down GoodYear road-race slicks. Grin

Moss, he's running a heavily-ported P75. Same head I actually had on my B20 before I went B20/VTEC.

I've heard of good results with 404s. Something like Bisi's level 2 or Level 3 cams would work well too.

Moss,
1st, I like the color and looks of your ride.  Wink

I built my LS in probably about 04.
Everyone else was going Vtec and I decided to be different.

I put b16 oversized pistons on the stock rods.. no prob.
Had my head ported/polished and put in the Crower 403's with crower springs/titi retainers.

while the engine was out, made sure to replace every hose belts/ seals / etc and had my injectors redone at RC.

at the time I had a Gude Bullforg ECU and made 179 to the wheels, about 8600k rpm
.(manual adjustments to fuel/timing- no ECU flash)
CR is 11 : 1

Have about 80k on the motor now, still running strong but eating oil.
Running the stock ECU and passing smog when fitting the stock Cat back on.
(driving the thing 40mi a day since I moved here from CA about 3 years ago.)

One problem.

I don't know if the cams are not "true",
but there is def. some vibration up top.
after the install, about 25k miles into it, my t-belt stripped teeth and looked at my DC gears, and they were WORN..??
put on my stock gears, and about another 25k went by and again, stripped teeth on the t-belt.
after this one I realized some of my cam caps were CRACKED! about 3 ..
decided to let it go for a few months, then replaced them completely.
my water pump bearings went a few months ago, (probably due to all of the vibration problems in the past)
but I never replaced it then. threw on a new w/p and t-belt, just because we were in there..
somewhere along one of those t-belt slips I think may have slightly bent a valve because i'm a little lower on compression
in one cylinder, but not bad enough to rebuild right now.

sorry for the story but I know its hard to find info on LS builds.
If you do it right, it can be very reliable, and make for a fun car on the track and compete with vtec motors..

on the other hand vtec is vtec and is financially better to make power.. I spent waaay to much building the LS..hahaha.
I'd probably do an LS vtec, beacuse I love the torque of the LS.

hth, my .02

any question lmk, I did alot of reseach before doing this weighing the pros and cons.

also, I noticed  from some posts you're from Socal.. what part?
I'm from HB.
