Go ride in a SCCA car as a passenger and I guarantee you'll change your mind.  Going in a straight line takes skill, but IMO learning to control a car fast in corners is harder.

Whatever eric.  I remember you telling me how much fun it was after riding with dona then you called and asked if i would go with you to the next one so I could ride with dona too.  You told me after riding with him that you wanted to try it yourself you had so much fun.  You even said you wanted to run at miller.  Then out of nowhere you had your screw turns mantality again and only wanted to drag race.

what's so awesome about going fast in a straight line?  Roll Eyes

I think, among the general population of autocrossers, there are very few who think it's the end-all of driving their car.  For me (and many others) it's mostly just seat time to improve my driving skill and iron out my car setup.  It's a stepping stone to actual racing (whether door-to-door or time trial style) without nearly the cost overhead - for a rally car (what I know) you're looking at at least $10k in car prep and safety gear, before towing 8+ hours and paying $500-$1k for an entry fee.  Compared with that, the $30 for an autocross is a bargain.

Obviously, there's a big difference between an actual race or rally and autox/rallyx - the skills don't even transfer 100%.  But my thought is - if it's going to take ~5 years for me to save the $10k and build my race car, why not tack an extra year onto that (event costs), and come into whatever racing I choose with 6 years of experience driving a car on the limit.

//mebbe if your roomie had done a few autocrosses, he would have known his car's limits a little better, and not totalled it...
////still more impressed by a 500whp volvo going sideways around a dirt corner in the forest at 70mph than any 1/4 mile time.

i think it might be fun to actually do it maybe once but my car doesnt like corners it tends to start skipping on me when i goo fast

but i kinda understand where your all coming from even eric riding would prolly just be kinda like wow that was fun lets not do it again

oh and my old roomie wrecked because he was unfamiliar with the road not many lights and was going wayyy to fast turned just fine but the brakes locked up and he hit a curb that was more like a small medien and jumped it into a telephone pole sideways at around 50 mph which nearly cut the car clean in half hell it split his fat fives in half when he hit the curb i have only seen 2 pictures when i first meet him almost 2yrs ago but im suprised that he even lived it was a sardine can that was cut nearly in half it stopped at the shifter and if it would have been a lhd he would have died no questions asked thank heaven for rhd but he is one of the best drivers i know too so it was just chance to slick roads as well as other things i am sure

Well thats another thing. The more you go the more you learn your car. And in turn you will know your peak speed around "X" corners.
And on these courses you would have to screw up big to actually do damage to your car. They give you plenty of room.

I for one enjoy the fact that you can be matched up with another stock vehicle, say a Porsche. Now say in a straight line that Porsche will spank your stock car, even if you claim to be the better driver. Now, throw some turns in the equation, and your $20k stock Honda spanks the Porsche because you are the better driver. It really does show who is the better skilled driver.

Also, autocross is one of the safest forms of autosports around. There is no car-to-car contact, no car-to-barrier contact., relatively low speeds with ample room to correct a slide off.

I used to go out to an event called Porsche's and ponies for puppies for the humane society.  It was fun beating some of the old crotchety guys in their expensive cars with something my friend and I built for 5k.
