Ok so I have a weird problem with my car. I drove home from the store, car drove fine, pulled into the garage, parked the car and noticed the shifter went limp. Moved the shifter into the neutral position went to release the clutch and the car was still in gear. (stuck in first).

The shifter can now move in all directions freely with out touching a gear as if it has become disconnected. So I pulled the center console and checked the shifter itself, and it appears connected, and the shift cables are also intact. I popped the hood and checked the cables to the shift linkage and they are also intact but the metal piece (shift lever that runs into the trans and connects to ibelieve the shift fork?) that the cables are connected to moves freely as if it has become disconnected from the trans....

Any thoughts ideas? Is this a problem with the shift fork or something internal with the trans? Car is kinda stuck where it is for now... weird because it just happened, no sound no grinding just a normal drive home too...

pull the cables off and try to shift the trans by hand.  Do you have a short shifter?
