2011 Wide Open Wednesday Dates

April 16 (8:30 a.m.-Noon) *
May 11
June 8
July 13
August 10
August 27 (8:30 a.m.-Noon)*)
September 7
October 22 (8:30 a.m.-Noon - Full Track Configuration)*

*WOW Grand Prix only.  Road Course is NOT OPEN these days.

The following activities are available:

Racetrack » $25
There’s no better place to have fun and test your skills than on the world-class tracks at Miller Motorsports Park – the most advanced, safest and best-equipped road racing facility in North America. Cars are released onto the track one at a time, and laps are not timed, so it is not racing and it is not a competition. It does allow you to drive at whatever speed your comfort level permits, to enjoy your car’s abilities and sharpen your skills. Precautions are in place to keep you and everyone else safe; it will definitely be one of the most memorable experiences of your life.

Autocross » $10
An autocross is a form of motorsports competition in which a single car and driver navigate a course marked by traffic cones against the clock. It is not a high-speed competition, but it is very challenging and amazing fun! During WOW, we set up an autocross course in our paddock and you can put your car and your skills to the test. For only $10, you can make as many runs as time permits. The fun is in seeing how much you can improve from run to run.

Racetrack & Autocross » $30
For a discounted price of $30, you can run unlimited laps on the big track and the autocross course, or at least until you run out of gas!

Karting » $10
Another way to satisfy your need for speed is our “10 for 10” karting experience. You can take 10 laps on Miller Motorsports Park's world-class kart track for only $10. Fees include a $5 annual kart license (one-time annual payment). *

WOW Grand Prix
For those who are really into speed and want to race, the WOW Grand Prix was made for you. The WOW Grand Prix is an eight-race kart racing league for novices, held on the MMP kart track. Sign up today to improve your skills and compete against other novice drivers. Drivers are grouped based on weight to ensure a competitive field. Classes are: Light (up to 175 lb), Sportsman (176-209 lb) and Masters (210 lb plus). We provide the kart (one of our standard Sodi rental karts), a helmet and neck brace. Racing suits and gloves will be available to rent. Drivers are not required to wear a racing suit, but must have a long-sleeved shirt, full-length pants and closed-toe shoes. Race day will consist of a practice/qualifying session, a heat race and the main event. Fees include a $25 competition license (one-time annual payment) and $55 per event. Prizes will be given each week to the winners, and at the end of the year to the overall point leader. Although it is an eight-race league championship, drivers have the option of competing in as many or as few races as they prefer. *

* Please check this website [information forthcoming] or call the Kart Center at 435-277-7200 to ensure that you are aware of all participation and eligibility requirements before making your trip to the track.

Off-Road Course » $20
If your taste in motorsports leans more toward dirt than pavement, bring your four-wheel-drive/off-road vehicle and test your skills on our challenging seven-acre off-road/rock-crawling course. Our facility has been described as one of the best man-made rock-crawling courses in North America, with a staggering variety of terrain and levels of difficulty.

Jeep Thrill Ride » $10
Leave the driving to us and ride shotgun with a professional driver from the Miller Motorsports Park Off-Road School and see exactly what the school’s specially-prepared Jeep Wrangler Rubicons can do. We take you on a ride around our challenging off-road course showing you how the Jeeps handle in a variety of different terrain. We’ll show you how the Jeeps perform in off-camber situations and in ascending and descending the various obstacles on the course. This is a gravity-defying ride you’ll never forget!

Museum & Facility Tours » Free
The Larry H. Miller Total Performance Auto Museum contains part of Larry Miller's world-renowned collection of automobiles, artwork and memorabilia related to Carroll Shelby, the legendary American racer, manufacturer and team owner. These include Shelby Cobras, Shelby Mustangs and Ford GT40s, plus a few other special vehicles.

Eligible Vehicles
Eligible cars for the racetrack include all street-legal and race-prepared cars with a hard top and convertibles with roll-over protection (either a factory installed deployable system or a roll bar with a minimum of four mounting points). Eligible vehicles for the off-road course include all street-legal 4x4 trucks and SUVs having a hard top, or vehicles with soft tops or topless vehicles with a factory rollcage or aftermarket rollcage of increased strength and quality. The seatbelts that came as original equipment for the vehicle or aftermarket safety-certified seat belts are required to use the off-road course.

Just checked with MMP and I want to clear up some confusion in the schedule posted.  The 1st full WOW event is May 11th.  The April 16th event is for the Kart races only so if you show up that date you cannot race your car.  First race for cars is May 11th.

A few changes this year.  The time has changed from 5-8 to 5:30-8:30.  Not a big change as thats how they pretty much ran it anyways.

They did away with the $1 = 1 lap of Autocross.  If you wanna run the autocross course it is now $10 for unlimited laps.  Thats the only option they have now.  You can also get an unlimted pass for the road course and autocross for $30.

Road Course is still $25 this year and you need to supply your own helmet unless you want to rent one for an additional cost.

*Edit Original post updated and sticky with all info pertaining to the 2011 WOW Events.

A question or two for those who have done this in the past:

Approximately how long is the course (how bad will I wear my summer tires ;D)?

What kind of helmets are best?  Is there a go-to best-bang-for-the-buck helmet?

All the events i've been to they have only ran on the East Course which is just over 2 miles long.  Yes it will take a beating on your tires.  I've ran at 5 events and have got at least 7 laps at each of those events.  Before the first event I ran my tires (BFG G-Force Sports) had around 80% tread on them.  35 laps later i'd say they now have around 35% left.  Of course many different things will factor in.  My tires don't wear as quickly because my car isn't daily driven.  Also your tires softness rating will play a big part.  The softer they are the better they will grip and the faster they will wear out.

As for helmets I use a sport bike helmet that I bought from a friend.  My helmet is around 5 years old but they don't have a certain requirment that the helmet needs to meet for the WOW events.  Look around on KSL or Ebay to see if anyone is selling there old helmets.

Depends on how hard you run them. I didn't have any nice tires going out there, but this year I will. If it's your first time, just get out there to get the swing of things. Then you'll know what you need.  I use a Pyrotect helmet I got off eBay. It was a good price and comes with a nice carry bag.

You can't have passingers while racing however they can ride with you on the parade lap when they take you around the track to get a feel for it before racing begins.

Thanks.  That would be even better.  I was curious because my son wants to go around.  I would be willing not to push it for a lap just for him to feel that experience but if there is a very slow controlled roll through that's even better.  Get's the experience without Dad stressing.  LOL!!!!

Your car has a factory roll bar so you will be fine.  Leave your top and no one will even second guess it.
