*The official tool thread*
« on: July 31, 2012, 08:57:18 AM »
I tried searching for something like this on here, and found nothing. So figured it would be kinda cool to have a thread like this, since ya know, we all work on cars and need tools to do so? Hah.

No matter what you're using, Craftsman, Harbor Freight, doesn't matter. Post in here about what tools you use regularly, what's your favorite tool, and why you chose the brand you did.

Also, what tools or anything tool related (boxes, engine stands etc) that you plan on buying, or want to buy.

Ps. Pics would help a ton. Everyone loves pictures.  :P

I'll start. I plan to get the Matco Tools 1/2 Flex-head 88 tooth ratchet soon. It'll match my 3/8 Flex-head.(I love that ratchet)

Have mostly Snap On and Caterpillar (snap on) stuff in my box.  Really I think most of the big tool mfg's make pretty close to the same stuff, you just really have to establish a good relationship with your tool truck guy because that makes all the difference in the world when you are trying to get things replaced for warranty or items ordered quickly.  I've dealt with a few tool guys that I feel almost ran a Ponzi operation because items would take forever to come in.  I'll post a few pics of my setup later.

I have a great snap on guy (bill barker)
I have a ton of craftsman because they are more of an entry level tool company.
I am slowly replacing it all with snap on though.

Snap 3/8 cordless impact this is amazing at work.

Yeah, I agree I started out with a lot of Craftsman aswell, but I'm doing the same as you and replacing them with better/higher quality tools..... So b18C_R_EG you're a Diesel tech? Where do you do that at.

That would be a nice box to buy, Snap-On seems to have the most customization available when it comes to boxes. I'm plain Jane though, and just wanna get black box aswell. For example I couldn't see myself with a lime green box. Haha.

I want to get this, its a badass 3/8 impact. 300ftlbs.

I had some cheap Pittsburg (harbor freight) brand tools and was using a ratchet and totally snapped it. Will never use them again haha but I borrowed some of my buddies "husky" tools and love em! Sorry, don't have any pics.

I work for ace disposal they are a local garbage company. Yeah a lot of The people here have boxes that are 6ft by like 8ft and cost almost 10k+ I'm like damn that's a lot of money. I like our snap on guy cause he usually comes after our Matco guy and I can say well Matco has this tool for this price and get a better deal through snap on.
That is a nice impact gun I used it the other day on some rusted to shit bolts it didn't even struggle taking them off.

IR makes most of the Matco/Mac impacts.  You're better off getting those online or even through Sears.  Same gun, just branded different.

i won a blue point basic tool set and a matco cart at weber state earlier this year, but i also already had a basic 100 piece channel lock tool set. the blue point tools are nice but the channel lock ones work just fine too. i'm not completely sold on expensive tools yet. i did use my amazon gift card to get a makita 4.5" angle grinder and a dremel 3000 recently and am happy with both. right now the only thing i need on a regular basis but don't have is a good 1/2" breaker bar. any recommendations?

Nah, I think my main box was only like 7800 and the roll around was like 1400.   I went with a lower model box so I could get a larger box.  If you notice I don't have the heavy duty casters like the one b18c posted

Yeah it has the multi dim two button and strobe setting it's the exact same one the police use. It was 160 with two batteries a car charger and a home charger but they sure do hold up well one got dropped from about 10 feet today onto concrete and didn't even scratch it

How much did you pick it up for? Snap On truck here charges $50 for that like LOL. I ended up getting this last week and so far it's good but
I want a light with the pocket clip.

So I am picking up about $5000 worth of tools in the next month so excited!!

i was sad when i ordered my black matco 6s and it showed up all screwy!  the whole fit and finish of the box, side locker, and hutch were off!  it was going to cost me like 12-14k.  it took them like 3 months to build it and it looked like shit... i was sad because that was my dream box. i had them pack it up and take it with them. they tried to give me a huge discount on it but i figured id come to work everyday and see how tweaked it was and not be happy.  so i just got a big snap on box and couldnt be happier.  much better build quality. imho. so i dont know if someone was drunk when they were building my box and i just got a shitty one or if they are all like that..

Are you picky with brand names? Cause brand name quality & price. If you want something cheap no power & obviously cheap.

Ingersoll Rand makes some good Impacts.

Just depends on how much you wanna pay, lots of options. Snap-on seems to have the most expensive guns.

If you get one off a truck, they let you do payments, so kinda doesn't matter how much ya pay.

I'm using a Cornwell Impact. It's a Ingersoll Titanium. Just with the Cornwell name. I love it, lots of power. It retails for $380, but I got it for $300 on promo. Also the noise level comes into play aswell. If you don't like super loud ones.... They can get annoying.

I love the snap on digital torque wrenches they are awesome just usually expensive as hell. I found a 1/2in cordless snap on impact at a pawn shop I put on layaway it was only 450 which is 150 less than what I paid for my 3/8s so I had to snatch it up. The best part is even if it's junk and out of warranty it's only 100 to have it rebuilt

I hate when I order tools, and then come to find out AFTER that its on back order? Like a 1/2 extension I ordered from Matco is on backorder... A hella common extension is on back order, like really? Haha. Just annoying.

Haha. Very nice.

I wanna hold off on a box so I can get more tools first. It's so tempting every week when the dealer rolls by.

I've bought a few things this week. Some 3/8 metric deep and shallow sockets from Cornwell. Also bought a condom from Cornwell for my impact gun. I picked up some new bits from Snap-On for my drill. Also picked up a 1/4 Flex ratchet from Snap-On.

Ordered my box and LOTS of goodies I'll post pics when they arrive, my next thing is a serpentine belt kit. It slipped my mind but looking at it
it's a very good investment especially the ratcheting end.

Ace disposal it's a garbage/recycling company.
Yeah I broke my coworkers two days ago taking off a air compressor called our guy showed right up.
Those crank bolts are on there insanely tight I had to use my friends dads snap on 3/4in pneumatic impact and it even struggled a sec.
I can see if our guy wants to pick another shop if you want a new guy?

That just seems like a shipping error.... Either way these are all just opinions. I personally chose Matco because of a few reasons.

1. I really like Matco Tools.

2. The price compared to Snap-On boxes. I also don't like the look of the Cornwell boxes.

3. Seems like everyone has a Snap-On box.

4. The reviews on the box.

I also prefer Matco because of the price but mostly because our Matco guy comes twice a week where snap on comes once. That and they both come with a lifetime warranty so why pay more.

Yeah. Everyone does have a snap on box. I figure the important stuff,
-box
-air gun and air tools
Will be a al on.
Then the normal, wrenches, sockets, etc will be cheaper.

My co-worker just bought the 6 grand snap on scan tool with euro attatchments. Must be nice

Nice how much was the jump box?

I'm done with my Matco dealer. He's nice, but he doesn't hook it up at all, he seriously won't even budge like 20 bucks on his prices. It's like WTF.
I still want their 3/8 Impact, but ill wait.

I'm sticking to Snap-On for big purchases. He hooks it up! And gives way good deals (not to mention free shit.), plus he is way loyal, and makes sure your happy and don't have any broken tools or anything.

Yeah our Matco guy isn't to bad on budging a little.
I refuse to buy from our cornhole guy he's never introduced himself asked if I needed anything. At least our other tool guys will go out of their way to make sure I have everything.
I won't buy another Matco tool box though he did screw me over on that.

I refuse to buy from our cornhole guy he's never introduced himself asked if I needed anything. At least our other tool guys will go out of their way to make sure I have everything.
I won't buy another Matco tool box though he did screw me over on that.

Cornhole. Lol.

That's not a bad price for it. They always come in handy, I want one.

Still haven't got my cover. Grrrr. (once again Matco taking ages to get shit in Lol)

I haven't got much lately. Just a few Lil things here and there. Lots of wants. Lol.

What's on everyone's to-get list?

I need to get me a Die Grinder. Preferably the right-angle. I'll probably end up getting one from Cornwell.
I also want to get the Master set of Torx/Hex sockets from Cornwell.

That's the only downfall of Matco if it ain't on the trick you'll probably end up waiting.

I'm waiting on the 15in wratchet with 5 piece ext set.
I recently purchased a new blue point mine torch and a tazor haha that tazor was probably the coolest purchase as of yet.

I need to get me a nice drill. Can't decide if I want a pneumatic one, or cordless.

If I go cordless I think I'm gonna go with Makita.

Where is everyone?

Picked up some hammers from Snap-On today. It's sad, I actually didn't have a hammer. LOL.

OH, and he hooked me up with a pretty sweet Snap-On coat!

Very good thread title.

I went cordless and bought Mikita. The white casing was dirty in a day:( but other than that no complaints. Easy to easy, move around, don't have to worry about air hose. Only problem is done bolts can be bitches which requires an impact. But that's not everyday,

Bought a 13/16, 7/8, 15/16 and 1" wrenches from Snap-On.

$60 bucks a wrench.... Shit. Oh well I needed them for alignments. I thought I'd be good with just Metric wrenches... Nope. Lol.

Nah, I think my main box was only like 7800 and the roll around was like 1400.   I went with a lower model box so I could get a larger box.  If you notice I don't have the heavy duty casters like the one b18c posted
I bought my roll around box just like yours on the left from my snap on man for 800.00. why is there such a huge price difference?

Ah, real Tools. I though this was gonna be Tool Thread as in most Corvette owners 8)
Well guess i'll add this nifty Torque Wrench, Brownline Metal Works Their $100 new.
Have checked accuracy against Snap On 1/2" Drive and both dead on. Highly recommend this.
Problem; it's 1/2" Drive so not the best option for assembling Engines:(

If your talking to me? I picked that up on a Corvette they was doing a Xmas Special. You can order it off Brownlinemetalworks.com . Wrench itself is $100 or $150shipped including the Case. The Case is really nice and I Recommend it. I'll pm the guy and see if I can get a Coupon code and maybe you can still get it all for $100.

Damn Special ended the 15th. http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c6-corvette-general-discussion/3177204-digital-torque-wrench-holiday-special.html#post1582894475
Could still try to enter the Code- Vette or Code- HT. For 1/2" you'd be Crazy to buy a Snap On IMO. I'll be picking up a 3/8 Snap On, 1/2 " is not the best for most Internal Parts.

Picked up a few things such as a Ratcheting serpentine belt tool from Matco. (Soooo much more convenient than the normal tool) also picked up a few things from Cornwell, a 1/2 universal, a stubby ratcheting wrench set, a 10-19mm extra long wrench set. (I love them) and I recently just ordered a master fuel and A/C removal kit.

I just picked up a nitro cat 3/8 from cornwell more expensive then I found on amazon but that impact is the shit its quit and has 700ft lb brake away its a neat little gun I don't even use my 1/2 in ingersal titanium any more. Also picked up brake caliper set for rear brakes and double flex ratcheting wrenched no pics though right now I am filling up my little cart. Waiting for an apprentice position so slowly trying to build my tools.
